ADHD: One In Three Children Wrongly Diagnosed, One says Australian Study

At least one in three Australian children is wrongly diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), according to a study led by a leading psychiatrist Dr. Jon Jureidini. Dr Jureidini is among a group of concerned doctors who warned the Federal Government’s ADHD panel about the alarming surge of ADHD misdiagnosis in Australia, urging the panel to revise the current diagnostic guidelines and criteria for ADHD.

Some child experts are concerned with paediatricians who immediately diagnose children with ADHD and readily prescribe a dose of Ritalin (methylphenidate HcL), a psychostimulant medication that may potentially pose a serious risk of dangerous side effects to young children such as decreased appetite, poor weight gain, headaches, stomachaches, social withdrawal and even stunt developmental growth. Since there is no objective medical test to confirm an ADHD diagnosis, parents are sometimes misguided with inaccurate information about the condition and forcing a mentally healthy child to take in highly potent drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin, drugs proven to be more potent than cocaine.

Hence, Brain Gym Australia Inc., an organisation of Educational Kinesiologists, established an educational program for children and adults with learning challenges such as Dyslexia, ADHD or those suspected of having ADHD, including anxiety, stress, depression, delayed child developmental challenges. This includes professionals such as Enza Lyons, a Registered Kinesiologist, Workplace Performance Coach And Brain Gym Trainer at Dynamic Learning and Health in Brisbane who believes that children who are fidgety and anxious should not be immediately labelled as ADHD and be put on Ritalin or amphetamines medication without exploring other drug free solutions.

Our Brain Gym and Educational Kinesiology program uses movement and muscle testing to detect and release imbalances or stresses in the body, integrating primitive reflexes and coordinated body movements in children to help them release anxiety, increase physical activity and boost concentration and focus.” Enza Lyons says.

One in ten Australian Unversity students use Ritalin...

Furthermore, it’s not only our younger children being affected. A recent study of University students at four Australian universities has found one in ten students used prescription amphetamines like Ritalin "for study and to be more alert in class" purposes. The results published in the Performance Enhancement and Health journal suggest that Australian students may be using these substances at a greater rate than students in the US or Germany and that they appear to use Ritalin and other substances for an immediate effect (e.g. to improve concentration) rather than longer term outcomes (e.g. higher marks)."

This is turning into an epidemic on many fronts for children, parents, university students and others taking Ritalin for all the wrong reasons. In many cases Ritalin is just a quick fix ‘band aid’ solution either being diagnosed to treat children with learning difficulties or violent behaviour or being bought and shared between university students.

People need to understand that taking drugs such as Ritalin and amphetamines can have devastating effects on development as well as their mental and physical well being long term and that they have other methods and strategies to help them stay focused, have more energy and overcome learning difficulties naturally using brain exercises and movement such as the Brain Gym program.”

Brain Gym is a 'drug-free' brain training program that actually assists people of all ages. Many have reported quicker, clearer thinking, improved memory, increased alertness, better concentration and attention, increased motivation, happier mood and better behaviour.

I get very excited when my clients achieve their goals. Here are some of the recent testimonials.

“I want to thank you for the miraculous transformation in Alex's behaviour. From the minute he walked out of your room after the last session, he was different and continued to be an absolute delight. I am so enjoying him and the shift in his behaviour. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”  Kate, Mother

"I now bring Oliver to see Enza to do Brain Gym. Last year we had a horrible year at school. It was very difficult. Oliver was not able to sit still. He was not following instructions. He was in trouble everyday from the teachers and from other parents. We discovered Brain Gym and we have been coming along to see Enza.

Oliver's school life is so much better. He is one of the top readers in his class. Socially he is making connections with friends. The other parents are happy and smiling at me rather than rousing at me. We are so happy that we have found Brain Gym. It's been fantastic for us."   Amanda, Mother

"This Brain Gym Professional Development Program has been fantastic. I have a 8 month old daughter, a wife and I am a PE teacher. I see something for everybody. I thoroughly recommend the Brain Gym program. It's been one of the best PD's I have ever been too. Thank you very much."   Craig, P.E. Teacher

Brain Gym keeps us productive, in a good mood, energised and achieving the task outcomes. Students show delight in getting 20 out of 20 for spelling instead of 2 out of 20, and making no mistakes in their reading, excellent recall and fluency (where they used to stumble over words). It is essential for my teaching efficiency and effectiveness to use Brain Gym every lesson.”  Sandra, Learning Support Teacher

In fact, neuroscientist believe there is a lot we can do to improve our memory, learning and behaviour. The brain needs exercise in much the same way our muscles do. The right mental workouts can improve our thinking which is essentially a process of making neural connections in the brain.

While any physical education may 'wake up' the brain, the 26 Brain Gym exercises ( developed by Paul and Gail Dennison ) further foster the flexibility, eye teaming and hand-eye coordination that allow learners to thrive in the classroom, along with the ability to live happily and creatively amid the stressors of modern life. Brain Gym is a safe, natural physical motor sensory therapy that can help the whole family with stress relief, workplace performance, health problems, anxiety, depression and relationships.

At the Brain Gym workshop you will master the Brain Gym movements and the when, where and why to use the movements with the students and your children. You will experience life changing skills of rewiring the brain through a simple yet powerful five step process.
